Highlighting Our Magnificent Wild Species & Spaces
I am pleased to announce the completion of another painting in my ‘Darkness’ series. This special line is dedicated to our beautiful yet vulnerable Canadian Species and Spaces At-Risk. In this new painting, I have chosen to portray an endangered species in Ontario, Canada. As I often do, I have placed the subject within its natural habitat to highlight the importance and necessity of ecosystems. Afterall, without its habitat this beautiful little creature I have portrayed might not exist.
It is imperative that we all take a moment to consider Nature and everything that it represents as well as to understand how every element and every species has a crucial role to play. More importantly, to appreciate Nature and accept that, as a nation, we can and should take steps to ensure that our Canadian ecosystems stay healthy and strong so that we can continue to enjoy the beauty of Nature and all that it encompasses ~ now and for generations to come. ‘On Fragile Wings’
The setting for this painting was purposefully chosen to replicate and murky stream with muddy banks and adjacent forest. As with all ‘Darkness’ paintings, it is designed to highlight the main subject and draw attention to the urgency of species loss. While some paintings move from light to dark, others are completely surrounded by darkness that slowly seeps inward toward the species at-risk. The latter is the style of this particular piece. Whenever possible, I design the subject in such a fashion to show it being drawn into the darkness while also peering back at those watching as if asking – why am I not worthy of a place on this earth…
Laura’s Clubtail Dragonfly…
This beautiful insect is endangered in Ontario and found within a very limited range. Its phases of life include egg, larvae and adult. Laura’s Clubtail is sensitive to pollution, development, agricultural practices and invasive species. We cannot allow this magnificent little creature to perish from our province. Artist Comments, Pledge & Request:
It should never be said – Well, it’s just one species. It can’t make that much of an impact if we lose it. But – consider the tiny bee. Without it, we could lose our food source when some crops fail to produce due to lack of pollination. Life might be very different than what we witness now and perhaps, take for granted. I cannot conceive of a world without the raw beauty and magnificence that Nature bestows upon us. However, it is extremely fragile. And it calls on all of us to help it survive and thrive. We must live harmoniously; be good stewards and watch over Nature as though its life depends on us – because each and every day, it truly does.
This is why I have chosen to create the ‘Darkness’ series. From tiny insects and delicate plants to large mammals and more, the ‘Darkness’ line is designed to highlight both the beauty and the vulnerabilities of our precious Canadian flora and fauna. But it is also focuses on ~ hope. We must keep Nature strong and healthy. It is essential for all life.
Therefore, I developed the ‘Darkness’ art series and program to be part of the movement that is helping to keep Nature strong. Through my program, I have pledged to donate a portion of net proceeds from every item purchased in this line. Recipients of these proceeds are my specially chosen organizations that I believe work tirelessly to help protect and preserve our wild Canada so it can survive, thrive and live on for generations to come.
